What seems uniquely american is less paranoia but meta-paranoia, a fear of other people's fear.

Mods, the guidelines says no politics "unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon" and I think this essay might be that. Or at least it's explaining the current phenomenons that are prevalent in politics, but 50+ years ago.
