Browsing the site

The public catalog is built from public Hacker News data. The site does not use advertising trackers or sell browsing data. Cloudflare and the OrangeCrumbs web server may process ordinary request information such as IP address, browser details, requested URL, and request time for delivery, security, rate limiting, and error diagnosis.

Basic analytics are aggregate and operational. They are used to understand traffic, cache performance, and broken pages—not to build advertising profiles. The site records a small set of anonymous actions such as opening a story, changing a browse filter, following an external link, or receiving a form result. It never sends search text, email addresses, report notes, or destination URLs as analytics events.

The light or dark theme preference is stored only in your browser. A random analytics session identifier may be stored in session storage and disappears when that browser tab is closed. Analytics are disabled on local previews and non-production hosts.

Weekly email

If you subscribe, the email address you provide is sent to EmailOctopus and used only for the HN Hall of Fame weekly email and the subscription preferences you select. The list uses confirmation before sending. Every message includes an unsubscribe link, and you can leave the list at any time.

Link problem reports

If you report a dead link, wrong destination, incorrect archive, misleading screenshot, or duplicate item, the report stores the item identifier, issue type, optional note, relevant displayed URLs, and submission time. Cloudflare may also retain limited security information needed to prevent abuse. Reports enter a private review queue and never change a public record automatically.

Do not include sensitive personal information in an optional report note. Report details are kept only as long as reasonably needed to investigate the problem, document the resulting decision, and protect the form from abuse.

Your choices

You can browse without subscribing or submitting a report. You can unsubscribe from email through any message. For a privacy question or a request concerning information you submitted, use the contact route published on OrangeCrumbs and identify HN Hall of Fame in your message.
