I prefer SyncThing on both mobile and desktop devices. It's open source and mature, the server only makes devices findable between each other. It allows 1 or 2 way sync. And it has advanced settings for keeping removed files (e.g. trashbin that cleans anything older than X days.)

I would love to give this a try but its software supply chain story seems like a car crash, with dependency bumps needed every few days: https://github.com/immich-app/immich/commits/main/server/pac... I'm keen to use it as soon as the dependency story is mature (eg. it is packaged in Debian). This doesn't seem likely to happen any time soon. I'm sure many people won't care about this. Ouch, each photo's URL is "https://demo.immich.app/photos", and right-clicking and copying the image's URL gives me a blob: URL, so there's no way for me to tell someone "Look at this image!".
