When people ask "how would you write an operating system without C?", Oberon is what I point them to. It's a very different style than Unix, in that the Oberon language is a relatively integrated part of the operating system, rather than communication being through a machine-level ABI. Anyone that likes Wirth line of OS's and languages should check out the Modula-2 revision: http://modula-2.info/m2r10/pmwiki.php/Project/FAQ FAQ asks good questions and with rational answers. I'm still going to fight them on uppercase just for sake of adoption and saving pinky fingers. Otherwise, Modula-2 makes a nice C replacement and a start on safer C++ alternative that's easy to grok. I learnt about this project with the recent disappearance of one of its creator, Nikaus Wirth. What I found interesting, among other things, is the Text User Interface at the core of the OS. With the rise of ChatGPT and conversational search, I thought it may be useful to revisit such projects in the light of this new era of text and conversations first.
