Firstly this is awsome! As much as I like kittens... This adds the markdown for images too: .markdown img { display: inline; content: ""; } .markdown img:before { content: "![" attr(alt) "](" attr(src) ")"; display: inline; color: #333333; } The trick to make it work with images is the `content: "";` on the img element to stop the browser from treating it as an image. While I can't imagine why anyone would want/need to do this... it does do a great job at demonstrating the flexibility of modern CSS! The most clever bit (to me) is the underline characters on the <h1> element.

This is amazingly useful for exemplar/documentation purposes. A translator from real markdown to the htmlized form in pandoc might be useful
