HN comment orderLove ggwave! I used it on a short film set a few years ago to automatically embed slate information into each take and it worked insanely well. If anyone wants details: I had a smartphone taped to the back of the slate with a UI to enter shot/scene/take and when I clicked the button it would transmit that information along with a timestamp as sound. This sound was loud enough to be picked up by all microphones on set, including…
This (FSK + Reed Solomon for data over sound) is exactly what my team and I built at Chirp in 2012. We had some success as an app/SDK. If you Google around you can find some implementation details. The hard/er stuff was making it nice for humans, robust to echo/noise, work in ultrasound, and functional on low-spec devices https://web.archive.org/web/20131010174943/http://chirp.io/ I'm very glad to see people still thinking about it!
Thanks for posting this - I'm the author. I recently posted this to Show HN with a bit of background about the project [0]. My next goals for ggwave is to improve the mobile SDKs and provide more examples. If you want to help out - check out this issue [1]. I am also planning to add some even lower bit-rate protocols, but make them more robust and hopefully remove the sound markers. - [0] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25761016 - [1] https://github.com/ggerganov/ggwave/issues/2
Hi HN, this is a small C++ library for data-over-sound communication. It utilizes a very simple FSK modulation approach for audible and ultrasound transmissions, aiming to achieve reliable data transfer over reasonable distances. To showcase the library, I also implemented a free mobile app called "Waver: Data Over Sound" which you can easily install and try out (iOS and Android). The app uses "ggwave" and allows you to send and receive text messages using the phone's speakers and microphone. There…
