The Emacs community, like the Lisp community with which it overlaps, is very conservative, in the sense that it doesn't throw things away quickly or make huge changes lightly. For that reason, I'd be very surprised if this took off — even though it sounds like it would be mostly backwards-compatible. I think Emacs types would shy away from building JavaScript into their editor, having V8 be the engine, adding more layers of abstraction to understand and maintain, and splitting…

The main advantage Emacs has over other, more modern IDEs is ELisp, and the vast ecosystem built around it. I don't see how supplementing ELisp with JS would make Emacs more attractive; most of Emacs' shortcomings originate elsewhere: single-threaded core, IO-blocks-UI, ELisp defaulting to dynamic scoping, bad defaults in general, poor OS/GUI integration, antiquated nomenclature, and just the sheer number of third-party packages and config tweaking that it takes to bring features that should work out of the box…

This looks intriguing! Though, very niche: I'm both a JS dev, and an Emacs user - but I'd personally prefer to stick with Lisp... buuut, couldn't we have a LISP->JS transpiler and get the perf benefits without the JS? :) Ok, actually, having thought about it some more - this project seems really weird: I need have a play with it!
