I looked into using LaTeX in an online service once but my understanding was that LaTeX is difficult to serve as a service because there are several commands which allow arbitrary code execution. Is this whitelisting some of the syntax? How are they doing that? (btw, if it turns out they aren't please don't comment here about it but instead report it to them at https://www.sharelatex.com/security )

Hey creator of ShareLaTeX here, we didn't post on here (again) but we have been releasing a lot of new stuff since the last time the site was on the home page about 1 year ago to the day. Split view, command auto complete, multiple compilers and history are all done. Spell check, git integration and dropbox sync are just around the corner. We are using a sharelatex installation at work and so far it's pretty good. But the installation is a nightmare. There is a docker container available but the documentation is pretty scattered across multiple GitHub repo wikis. And when you got it to run with all environment variables, you need to install all latex packages inside the container.
