HN comment orderFor context, Raph Koster is not only the person who designed Ultima Online, but generally considered one of the top theoricians in game design. This isnt some guy who has a small blog and came up with a neat explanation for how some word came about in the early days of the web. Its the guy who did it.
EasyUO scripting was my introduction to programming at age 14. By the time I got to college I was already a professional coder and I was able to enjoy CS as a recapitulation or reinterpretation of my foundational understanding instead of a dogmatic prescribed methodology as I saw in my object oriented/relational database bound peers. I personally remember that couple of years, 95-97, as ripe for coming up by yourself with things that are now considered "obvious" or just the way things are done. Things happened fast: by the start of 1995 the concept of networked computers was a vague thing from the movies to me and by the end of 1997 I was an "experienced" web developer. New sharding is but old partitioning writ large. Partitioning sounded too much like what grandpa did, so they gave it a jazzy new name.
