HN comment orderI will repeat this one more time, because Eich seems to be missing the point.[1] I don't adblock for privacy, security, or speed. Those are just nice-side effects. I adblock because I do not want to be manipulated into buying things I do not need. I wonder what would happen if, as a society, we said, "enough, no more ads". Would it really be the capitalist apocalypse that the ad industry is trying to make us believe it would be?…
And similarly for Firefox with Tracking Protection turned on. The speed gains come from reducing the amount that's downloaded and rendered or executed: https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2017/11/20/firefox-private-bro... You can set Firefox's Tracking Protection to "always" so it's on all the time, inside and outside of private browsing mode.
I don’t see a compelling reason to use a new browser which requires me to pay in order to have an ad-free experience. I can have that experience now, and by using an ad and script blocker keep the cash in my pocket. Plus, I have a higher degree of confidence that my browser is correct, tracks standards, implements security measures, and tracks vulnerabilities.
"You are not a product. Why use a browser that treats you like one?" And that's why I use Firefox. At the end of the day, Brave is another for-profit browser: you are still the product, but with extra steps. I'd rather trust an open-source add-on to block ads and trackers than a web browser (much harder to make sure that it's doing what you want).
