The handmade hero community is wonderful. It is a portal to a lot of knowledge transfer. If you're looking to approach C/C++ in a welcoming environment and/or love getting closer to the metal, I highly recommend the community. I also recommend the handmade video series. I of course agree that a focus on high level abstraction with little knowledge of the underlying layers is a very problematic approach to programming. But I see the problem as something very different. To me the issue are two destructive thoughts patterns, in both developers and users. Developers believe that just because they can make something it deserves to exist. Users believe that just because it exists they are supposed to use it. I believe there is no better…

I really like the idea of a project oriented community with fishbowls and jams, and the focus on efficiency. I wonder if there's any similar communities focused on more typical modern dev practices? It seems like the interesting tech communities are often hacker ethos focused.
